John R. Clement Sr, dedicated husband of Carole Lindsay Clement, passed away peacefully at his home in Myrtle Beach, SC on Friday, August 19, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. John, 88 was born in Bethel, CT on October 7, 1933, where he lived until retiring to Myrtle Beach, SC in 2004.

John was the son of Alexander and Mary (Branco) Clement, he was predeceased by his three brothers, Anthony, Manuel, and Alexander and two sisters Hilda and Lillian. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 64 years Carole; daughters Debra Sutton (Rick) of Bethel, CT; Diane Clement of El Paso, TX and sons John Clement Jr (Lori), of New Fairfield, CT; Joseph Clement (Teri) of New London, CT and James Clement (Monique) of Myrtle Beach, SC.

In addition to his wife and children – John leaves behind his grandchildren Karl Yachulke (Mary) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Miranda Luis (Justin) of Brookfield, CT; Justin Clement (Samantha) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Kellie Clement (Kirk) of Jersey City, NJ; Joseph, Kyle, Lindsay Clement of New London, CT; Daniel and Thomas Clement of Myrtle Beach, SC. John also leaves behind three great grandchildren – Bailey and Liam Luis and Christopher Burger. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Catherine Clement of Danbury, CT as well as many nieces and nephews.

John graduated from Bethel High School, Class of 1952.

He started his career at B.J. Dolan in Bethel, CT where he worked as a driver delivering oil and concrete. He worked for the Town of Bethel, Water Department for several years before returning to driving. He was employed by Monroe Concrete for 15 years where he retired as a proud member of the Teamsters Union with over 30 years of service.

In addition to driving, John also worked at Nelson’s Hardware in Bethel, CT. He worked side by side with Mr. Nelson for over 15 years and eventually purchased the business and ran it for another 20 years with the support of his family.

John carried on the Nelson’s Hardware tradition recognized by many locals, “If you couldn’t find it at Nelson’s, you were not going to find it anywhere”. He had many fond memories of the store and was considered a staple of the town.

He had a passion for driving and would not think twice about driving anywhere for a good breakfast or lunch with his buddy, Billy.

We will celebrate John’s life with a funeral mass at St Mary’s Church, Bethel, CT at 10 am; Friday, October 7, 2022 followed by a burial service at St Mary’s Cemetery.
